DYERSVILLE, Iowa (KWWL)- The Luther College and Briar Cliff University baseball teams will play in the first-ever college baseball game at the iconic Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville next year.
The game is scheduled to take place on September 16, 2022.
"To paraphrase an oft-repeated line from the movie, 'If you build it, they will come,'" Briar Cliff University head baseball coach Corby McGlauflin said. "Briar Cliff is proud to go to the Field of Dreams, and we are thrilled to help make this dream come true for our students, fans and alumni."
In August, the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox played the first-ever Major League Baseball game in Iowa at the famous new Field of Dreams, only a few hundred yards away from the original Field of Dreams. It was FOX's most-watched regular-season game since 2005 with 5.9 million viewers.
"Playing on the Field of Dreams is something our players probably never thought they would get the chance to do," Luther College head baseball coach Bryan Nikkel said. "As they run out onto that iconic field and feel their spikes dig into the dirt, this game will undoubtedly bring out emotions and bring them back to the reasons they play baseball, a sport that has created so many opportunities for all of us, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is no different."
The two teams will play at the actual movie site, a popular tourist attraction in Dyersville. The movie was filmed on a baseball field in the middle of Iowa cornfields in 1989. 32 years later, it still resonates. Nikkel said he wants it to be a memorable game for his players but knows it will be about more than a baseball game.
"We want it to be a celebration for the student-athletes, alumni and friends and family of the program," he said. "It's an opportunity to showcase both colleges and both programs, while at the same time, gather together to enjoy the moment."
Earlier this week, the Field of Dreams Movie Site and the accompanying MLB field was purchased by This is Heaven, a venture headed by MLB Hall of Famer Frank Thomas.
There are current plans to expand the facilities to include baseball training and tournaments. The site looks to sustain the boost in tourism and economic success that the MLB game brought to the Dyersville area.
