MARION, Iowa (KWWL) -- A hand recount of votes in the tied race for the Marion City Council at-large seat began Tuesday.
Incumbent Randy Strnad and challenger Dale Monroe are tied with 3,244 votes each. Monroe was leading by one vote following election night, but the lead flipped to Strnad by one vote after provisional ballots were counted. Then, a write-in vote for Monroe was found and counted, tying the race.
The hand recount is taking place in the Linn County 'Jean Oxley Public Service Center' in Cedar Rapids. The recount board worked a half-day on Tuesday, and election officials expect the recount to take several days.
If the recount results in a tie, there will be a random drawing from a hat to determine a winner, per Iowa Code.
