WAUKON, Iowa (KWWL)-- People crowded the street corners in Waukon on Friday with signs and flags to honor veteran Trooper Ted Benda.

Police vehicles from all over Iowa lined Allamakee Street flashing their lights as Trooper Benda’s funeral procession passed. Despite the crowds there was a solemn silence as the procession made its way through Waukon. The procession ended at Martin’s Funeral Home in Waukon where they held a private service.

Trooper Benda had been with the Iowa State Patrol since 2016. Most recently he had been stationed at the District 10 office in Oelwein.

Benda passed away in the hospital following a single car accident he was in the week before while responding to assist the Clayton County Sheriff's office. He is survived by a wife and four young children.

Those who knew him held him in high regard.

Bill Campbell knew Trooper Benda his whole life, and said he was one of the best men he's ever known.

"He's there to take care of you no matter what, you know, he's he's if you get into trouble," Campell said. "He's to make do good for you."
