NEW HAMPTON, Iowa (KWWL) -- A New Hampton couple claimed a $2 million Powerball prize on Thursday, after the prize was announced on Tuesday.
Karla and Keith Elenz said that they found out someone in their community had won when an email had been sent out at their work, an auto-parts manufacturing facility.
Karla then went out to her car and checked her ticket, and the numbers matched up. The couple shared the news with their family that night and even Karla's mother in her 80s took a second to understand how much they won.
“She said, ‘You won $2,000!’” Karla Elenz recalled with a laugh. “I said, ‘No.’ ‘Well, $20,000?’ I said, ‘No, add a couple more zeroes!’ She goes, ‘$2 million?!’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ She goes, ‘Oh, my gosh!’ So she didn’t sleep that night at all.”
The couple said that they will continue working as normal, and their lives won't change much. They plan to invest the money as well as help local charities, but will enjoy an already planned trip to Las Vegas for a family birthday.
Karla and Keith's winning ticket was the only one across the country in Monday's drawing with a $2 million prize.
