EAST DUBUQUE, Illinois (KWWL) -- The mayor of East Dubuque unexpectedly announced his resignation during Monday night's city council meeting, citing recent health issues.

Kirk VanOstrand had been the mayor since 2019.

After the mayor made the announcement of his resignation, he left the meeting.

It's not effective until it's in writing and noterized.

After that, the City Council will have 60 days to appoint a replacement to finish VanOstrand's term which expires in 2023.

Councilman Randy Degenhardt was named Mayor Pro Tem in the interim.
