WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) Dubuque Hempstead's stingy defense shutout Waterloo West in the first half on route to a 28-14 victory over the Wahawks Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Waterloo.

The victory keeps Hempstead's Class 5A playoff hopes alive ahead of the regular season finale next Friday night against undefeated Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Class 5A uses an RPI formula for playoff qualifying, and only the top 16 RPI teams make the playoffs. Hempstead came into Friday night's game at Waterloo West at number 22, while West was number 25.

The loss eliminates Waterloo West from playoff contention, as the Wahawks will finish their season on the road next week at Ottumwa.

Hempstead gets home field advantage against Kennedy, the only undefeated team left in Class 5A. Kennedy entered the night at number 3 in the RPI.

Valley West Des Moines had been the top RPI team, but lost to West Des Moines Dowling Catholic Friday night.
