One man arrested after December 2021 officer-involved shooting

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) - The Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) arrested Eddie Ayers III after the December 17th, 2021 officer-involved shooting at the 1600 block of Center St. NE.

Investigators identified Ayers as the driver by video and other physical evidence found during the investigation. 

Eddie Ayers III is being charged with:

  • Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations: Use/Display Weapon

  • Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations: Bodily Injury

  • Interference with Official Acts with a Dangerous Weapon

  • Eluding Resulting in Injury

  • Speeding

  • Disobedience to Traffic Control Device

  • Failure to Dim

  • No Iowa Driver's License

Also, when investigators tried to arrest Ayers on Jan. 14, he fled leading to an additional charge of Interference with Official Acts.

Cedar Rapids Police report Reserve Police Officer Scott Fruehling will stay in a non-active duty status until a review of events has been completed by CRPD.

The investigation was sent to the Linn County Attorney's Office for a criminal review of the officer's actions.
