The district says it happened near Cargill on Otis Road and it wasn't affiliated with the school.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) -- Metro High School enacted a temporary "secure" protocol on Thursday morning after a shots-fired incident was reported near the school.
According to Cedar Rapids Police, the shots-fired report was received around 9:00 a.m. The call was originated from an industrial site along Otis Road SE.
No injuries were reported and the hold has since been lifted at the school.
The school district released the following letter to Metro families:
"This communication is to inform you of an incident that occurred this morning, September 5, 2024, around Metro High School. The school was notified by Cedar Rapids Police Department (CRPD) of a community violence situation near Cargill on Otis Road, not affiliated with Metro. We quickly acted on the concern and enacted our building’s “SECURE” Safety Protocol. When we entered our “SECURE” protocol, students were brought indoors, all outside doors were locked, and students continued their normal classroom activities. Students were not allowed to leave the school. Once there was no longer a threat per CRPD, the “SECURE” protocol was lifted, and we went back to normal operating procedures.
I want to stress that our students were safe and not in immediate danger. The SECURE Safety Protocol was a precautionary measure suggested by our law enforcement partners. Please know that we take these situations very seriously, as the safety of our students is always our absolute top priority.
