DYERSVILLE, Iowa (KWWL) -- Iowa's first-ever Major League Baseball game at the Field of Dreams in Dyersville August 12 is a highly anticipated event expected to reinvigorate the entire Field of Dreams legacy.

The game and Dyersville's 2-day 'Beyond the Game' festival will attract visitors from around the world.

"If you build it, he will come," is the classic quote known to all Iowans.

Well, they're building it...again. Just a couple of hundred yards west of the famous 1989 Field of Dreams movie set will be the new MLB stadium that the Yankees and White Sox will play in come August.

KWWL received special permission from MLB to be there while construction of the new stadium is underway.

Seating and infrastructure for the 8,000-seat temporary stadium won't be installed until July.

Travel Dubuque Executive Director Keith Rahe has been working with MLB to make the Field of Dreams more popular. He says the game will grow the legacy even more.

"How iconic is this to be out in the most famous cornfield in the world and Major League Baseball coming in and building this diamond," Rahe said. "What you'll see is the field itself is permanent. The diamond itself. But then, they come in and build all the rest of the infrastructure that they need and it's amazing. And when they get done, it's absolutely breathtaking. We can't wait for August 12."

The highly-anticipated game was originally scheduled to be played in August 2020, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the year off has not lost any interest in the game or the iconic field.

"Major League Baseball has told us this is one of the most popular events they've ever done," Rahe said. "So, people are coming from all over the country, all over the world to be here to experience this. So, just from that alone. Just from that marketing, that brand we can put on this for the state of Iowa. I can't put a price tag on it…It's priceless."

Dyersville will also be offering a two-day festival called "Beyond the Game," from August 11-12 to compliment the MLB game as crowds fill the city.

Executive Director of the Dyersville Chamber of Commerce Karla Thompson says that the festival will be held in both the town square downtown and in Commercial Club Park.

While demand is high for a ticket to the game, it might be tough to get one due to the 8,000-seat ballpark. MLB has not announced when the tickets will go on sale online, but they'll go fast when they do.
