CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids teen has been charged with two counts of First-Degree Murder after telling police early Thursday morning that he killed his parents.

Cedar Rapids Police found a 17-year-old boy covered in blood sitting outside a residence at 361 Carnaby Drive NE just after 2 a.m.

The teen, identified as Ethan Orton, told police he killed his parents and when officers checked the house they found two bodies.

Police say Orton is accused of using a knife and axe to kill his mother and father, 42-year-old Casey Orton and 41-year-old Misty Scott Slade.

According to the charging document, officers took Orton in for questioning where he said he stabbed his parents with a knife, and then used an axe to kill his mother after it appeared she was still alive. The document also states that Orton told police he killed his parents "to take charge of his life."

Cedar Rapids Police Chief Wayne Jerman talked about the killings Thursday afternoon. He said the victims were found in the living room area just inside the home and described Orton's demeanor when officers first saw him.

"I don't know if he was expecting the police to come, when we arrived the officer who encountered him first, described him as being calm," Jerman said.

Police say due to the seriousness of the offenses, the two First-Degree Murder charges were directly filed to adult court. He has been transported to the Linn County Detention Center.

Orton made his first appearance in court this morning, where the judge set his bail at $2 million.

Neighbors in the area reacted in shock and sadness, but remembered the victims as being kind and caring.

"Sick to my stomach. You just don't think this kind of thing can happen, and you just don't think it can happen in your neighborhood," neighbor Jean Garrett said. "And here it is in our neighborhood, and we have a nice neighborhood. It's just really hard to process. I still remember her laughing and joking with me a couple weeks ago."

One neighbor said the family has an older daughter who graduated and moved out.

This incident comes just months after 20-year-old Alex Jackson was charged with killing his parents and younger sister in Cedar Rapids.

"Both incidents are very tragic," Jerman said. "Any loss of life is very difficult. Both of these situations are very tragic and indescribable."
