Cedar Falls mayoral candidate holds first town hall event

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (KWWL)- Cedar Falls mayoral candidate Tom Blanford spent the afternoon answering voter questions and concerns.

Blanford is running to unseat current Cedar Falls Mayor Rob Green.

Blanford is holding "Talk with Tom" events at eight different parks throughout the city to engage with voters. He held his first Saturday at Clay Street Park.

"The part that gets overlooked most with city government is it touches people every day," Blanford said. "Every road you drive on, the hospital you go to when you need help is all part of city government. I think you want to make sure people have the ability to engage, ask questions and really participate and be active in the campaign."

Residents were able to ask him questions about his platform and vision for the city. Blanford said his core issue is workforce development in the Cedar Valley, adding the city has to be an active partner in working together to solve the issue.

"We are down almost 5000 students in five years at UNI, and we've seen that as we see restaurants that have had to close during parts of days of the week because they don't have the staff," Blanford said. "We really got to get that workforce built back up and Cedar Falls, and that's going to require the city partnering with UNI, with private business, and with Cedar Falls School District. That is essential to the future of this community."

Blanford has eight more town halls planned at different parks in the city.
