Oct. 6: New weekly COVID-19 cases in Iowa drop below 10,000

(KWWL) -- There were 9,860 new, confirmed cases from Wednesday, September 29 to Wednesday, October 6, according to the state’s dashboard, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 461,352.

That's an average of 1,408 new cases per day over the last 7 days. The number of new cases is down 8.8% from new cases reported last week.

The state’s website says that of the 461,352 people who have tested positive, 411,045 have recovered. This is 8,520 new recoveries compared to last week.

The state is reporting 91 new deaths from COVID-19 over the past week, with a death toll of 6,654. Eighty-one new deaths were also reported in the week prior.

Subtracting the number of recoveries (411,045) and the number of deaths (6,563) from the total number of cases (461,352) shows there are currently 43,744 active positive cases in the state. This is 1,340 more active cases than what was reported last Wednesday.

There were 92 patients hospitalized in Iowa within the last 24 hours and the total number of hospitalizations is 626 (up from 624 last week). Of those, 141 are in the ICU (down from 157 last week), and 66 are on ventilators (down from 80 last week).

People who are not fully vaccinated account for 85.8% of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state, and 74.1% of COVID-19 patients in the ICU.

As of Wednesday afternoon, according to the state’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard, 21,259 more vaccine doses were administered to Iowans last week for a total of 3,226,817 doses administered to Iowa residents. 12,199 more Iowans completed their vaccine series in the last week for a total of 1,688,994, which is 66.4% of Iowans 18 and older.
