Oct. 13: Active COVID-19 cases in Iowa dropped by 4,858 in last week

(KWWL) -- There were 8,167 new COVID-19 cases from Wednesday, October 6 to Wednesday, October 13, according to the state’s dashboard, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 469,519.

That's an average of 1,166 new cases per day over the last 7 days. The number of new cases is down 17% from new cases reported last week.

The state’s website says that of the 469,519 people who have tested positive, 423,885 have recovered. This is 12,840 new recoveries compared to last week.

The state is reporting 94 new deaths from COVID-19 over the past week, with a death toll of 6,748. Ninety-one new deaths were reported in the week prior.

Subtracting the number of recoveries (423,885) and the number of deaths (6,748) from the total number of cases (469,519) shows there are currently 38,886 active positive cases in the state. This is 4,858 fewer active cases than what was reported last Wednesday.

There were 92 patients hospitalized in Iowa within the last 24 hours and the total number of hospitalizations is 598 (down from 626 last week). Of those, 150 are in the ICU (up from 141 last week), and 78 are on ventilators (up from 66 last week).

People who are not fully vaccinated account for 79.2% of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state, and 84% of COVID-19 patients in the ICU.

As of Wednesday afternoon, according to the state’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard, 18,043 more vaccine doses were administered to Iowans last week for a total of 3,244,860 doses administered to Iowa residents. 11,034 more Iowans completed their vaccine series in the last week for a total of 1,700,028, which is 61.2% of Iowans 12 and older.
