Iowa Coronavirus

(KWWL) -- There were 10,346 new COVID-19 cases from Wednesday, November 17 to Wednesday, November 24, according to the state’s dashboard, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 518,859.

That's an average of 1,478 new cases per day over the last 7 days. The number of new cases is up 12% from new cases reported last week.

The state’s website says that of the 518,859 people who have tested positive, 478,991 have recovered. This is 6,667 new recoveries compared to last week.

The state has confirmed 86 new deaths from COVID-19 over the past week, with a death toll of 7,354. 102 deaths were reported in the week prior. (The IDPH says that these deaths were confirmed and reported in the past week but that they occurred between Sept. 2 and Nov. 17. However, the ones reported this week are not the only COVID-19 deaths in that time period.)

Subtracting the number of recoveries (478,991) and the number of deaths (7,354) from the total number of cases (518,859) shows there are currently 32,514 active positive cases in the state. This is 3,593 more active cases than what was reported last Wednesday.

There were 109 patients hospitalized in Iowa within the last 24 hours and the total number of hospitalizations is 623 (up from 544 last week). Of those, 146 are in the ICU (up from 123 last week), and 67 are on ventilators (up from 57 last week).

People who are not fully vaccinated account for 75.1% of COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state, and 85.6% of COVID-19 patients in the ICU.

As of Wednesday afternoon, according to the state’s COVID-19 vaccine dashboard, 19,662 more vaccine doses were administered to Iowans last week for a total of 3,349,650 doses administered to Iowa residents. 9,223 more Iowans completed their vaccine series in the last week for a total of 1,754,211, which is 63.1% of Iowans 12 and older.
