June 1: New weekly COVID-19 cases in Iowa dip slightly, hospitalizations increase

(KWWL) -- There were slightly fewer new COVID-19 cases reported this week in Iowa compared to those reported last week according to the Iowa Department of Public Health website

There were 3,854 new COVID-19 cases in the past week bringing Iowa's total number of cases to 780,019. That's around 2% less than last week and an average of around 550 new cases per day over the last 7 days.

The state has confirmed this week 15 new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 9,603. Sixteen deaths were reported in the week prior. Deaths reported by the state have generally occurred in the months before the reporting date.

National data from the Department of Health and Human Services shows there are currently 180 COVID-19 hospitalizations in Iowa. That's 35 more hospitalizations than the 145 that the state reported last week.
