Michele White is an award-winning multi-media journalist for KWWL in Cedar Rapids. Before returning to her Midwestern roots, Michele reported for FOX and ABC Alaska, covering the Matanuska-Susitna valley, the fastest growing area of the state. She previously reported for KTUU as the valley bureau chief and for KOMU in Columbia, Missouri, covering the Missouri legislature. Michele has also written for the Alaska Star, Alaska Contractor, Alaska Business Monthly, Alaska Dispatch, and Last Frontier magazine. Her story, “Climbing Denali in January,” won an Alaska Press Club award for Best Outdoors Story, All Media, in 2016. She has covered local and state politics and elections, high profile court cases, including efforts to recall a governor that went all the way to the Alaska Supreme Court. Michele has reported live from a mountain on a mobile phone after an avalanche; interviewed two of Alaska's governors and investigated sex trafficking of Alaska's women and youth.
Originally from Boston, Michele earned her Bachelor of Journalism degree from the Missouri School of Journalism, world-renowned as the top journalism school, with scholarships from the School and the Scripps Howard Foundation. During her college years, Michele interned with the I-Team at CBS Boston, where she helped research a sweeps investigation of medical malpractice cases in Boston. Michele also interned as a producer for the Sunrise show at Sky News in London while studying abroad for a semester.
Michele minored in French, which she speaks fluently. She also studied French in Paris and Cannes. She wrote stories as a freelancer for Charisma and World magazines about a controversial bill that infringed upon religious freedom in France and swiftly passed in the French Parliament. Michele’s experience living in London and Paris shaped her worldview and her reporting. A passion for adventure and an insatiable curiosity about the far away land of Alaska — where her father served in the U.S. Coast Guard — drove Michele to Alaska and turned the city slicker into an adventurous outdoors girl. Her latest adventure was venturing out onto the Alaska Highway in winter to get to her new home in Iowa. Ice-climbing on massive moving glaciers in the back country, skiing on Alyeska, whitewater rafting glacially-fed rapids, hiking in the mountains, fishing and camping in National Parks are hobbies Michele developed while living in the beautiful Last Frontier. She is currently writing two books about her adventures and the people she met along the way. Michele also enjoys shooting photography, traveling, playing piano, Pilates, ballet, reading, and a good practical joke.
Michele competed in the 2020 Miss Alaska for America pageant in August. She was honored to be awarded the 2020 Miss Alaska for America Woman of Achievement Award for her accomplishments and to be part of a tightly-knit sisterhood that celebrates women. Michele holds the title of Miss Iowa for America 2021 and she is bringing her platform around the state to inspire and encourage women and girls.
Michele looks forward to getting involved in the Cedar Rapids community, learning and telling the stories of Eastern Iowans and creating new outdoors adventures in the City of Five Seasons.
