Dubuque's St. Patrick's Day Parade canceled

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The traditional of the St. Patrick's Day Parade has been canceled in Dubuque this year -- falling on unlucky times. The green-fest is hurting, in part, for a lack of green. But the canceled parade doesn't mean the tradition is gone.

St. Patrick's Day is the busiest time of year for Maureen Siegert.

"Come into the parlor and make yourself at home," said Siegert.

She not only owns shamrock imports -- Siegert also heads the St. Patrick's Day committee, which decided to cancel this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade.

"Last year it cost $1700-1800 to put the parade on. We started out as a charitable group. We were paying the money for permits and insurance and bands and nothing left to give back out," said Siegert.

She also says a lack of volunteers and participants played a roll in the decision. Although costs play a minor factor in the cancellation of this year's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Dubuque, Maureen says she hopes this years events bring everyone back to their Irish heritage.

"We used to start out with mass then all walk from the church to the parade route to the irish party. It was great fun and we're getting back to that," said Siegert.

She says in Ireland -- St. Patrick's Day is a day of holy obligation -- a celebration of heritage. She hopes it can return to that this year -- with no official parade.

"We always had parades but the parade was the people marching," said Siegert.

While canceling the parade isn't easy.

"We know we're gonna hurt a lot of people and we know they'll be people who will say 'well we're richer.," said Siegert.

With a little luck of the Irish, St. Patrick's Day will march on. Dubuque will still hold the 34th Annual Irish Party at the Holiday-Inn Five-Flags Saturday night. If you're looking for a parade -- Dyersville will have its St. Patrick's Day Parade 1:30 pm Saturday afternoon.
