Report: Texas firm didn't get OK for reduced wages

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The Des Moines Register reported that Texas-based Henry's Turkey Service failed to get an annual certificate allowing them to pay mentally disabled workers less than the minimum wage.

A company official says Henry's hadn't obtained the certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor for five years.

Company accountant Robert Berry blames the Labor Department for not raising the issue until now, when the firm is being investigated for its role in housing the men in a rundown house and paying them little for their work at an eastern Iowa meatpacker.

Berry says the company also shares some of the blame.

The Labor Department declined to comment.
