$100 million dollar flood plan unveiled

DES MOINES (AP) -- Democrats are unveiling a $100 million flood relief package and are negotiating how to pay for it.

The $100 million recovery package includes:

  • $20 million for flood prevention projects
  • $12.5 million for home buyouts
  • $5 million for day care re-location
  • $5 million for non-profit restoration
  • $9.5 million for multi-family housing projects
  • $14 million for storm water drainage projects
  • $15 million for cultural and historical projects
  • $6 million for soil conservation and water retention efforts
  • $1.5 million in low-interest loans to prevent soil erosion
  • $795,500 for agriculture land management and hydrology study
  • $1.3 million for Iowa Flood Center
  • $5 million for parks, green space, and recreation repairs

"We all realize the importance of making sure that Iowans, not just in our own particular areas but across this state, have more additional resources to help them in putting the pieces back together," said Rep. Deborah Berry (D-Waterloo).

The House Rebuild Iowa and Disaster Recovery Committee will soon consider the proposal, but panel chairman Rep. Tom Schueller of Maquoketa says key decisions are weeks away.
