Environmental group pushes expanded rail service

DES MOINES (KWWL) - A Midwestern environmental advocacy group has opened an office in Iowa as it pushes for expanded rail service across the region.

Howard Learner, president of the Environmental Law and Policy Center, says efforts will focus on rail service from Des Moines through Iowa City to Chicago, an expansion that would cost about $125 million.

He says officials in Iowa and Illinois should compete for federal stimulus money to upgrade rail service.

Learner says there is a market for rail service, if it can be improved.

He says that pollution from a passenger train is less than an airplane or a car.
