'08 Floods force CR fireworks move

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival officials announced that at the request and direction of the Cedar Rapids Police and Fire Departments in the interest of public safety the festival's July 4th fireworks will be moved to the Kirkwood Community College campus again this year.

"The move is necessitated by the continuing impact of last year's flood on the neighborhoods surrounding the downtown venue, and the inherent safety risks to the 80,000 to 90,000 festival patrons who flock to the area in the afternoon and evening to enjoy the July 4th festivities," explained Freedom Festival operations director, Russ Oviatt.  "The annual pancake breakfast and Patriots Bazaar & Farmer's Market events, and the traditional Alliant Energy Fifth Season runs and walks, plus the Kid's Parade are still scheduled for the downtown Cedar Rapids venue.

"The relocation to the Kirkwood campus for the July 4th fireworks should not be construed as a permanent move," he added.  "We anticipate returning to the traditional downtown venue next year, but as always, that decision will hinge on being able to ensure that the venue is both safe and enjoyable."

Local public safety agencies have already begun planning traffic control and other aspects of the relocation.  Details of the event's traffic and parking plan will be released closer to the event date and in the official 2009 Freedom Festival Schedule brochure.

Dates for Freedom Festival 2009 are June 18-July 4, 2009.
