North Iowa hospital cuts jobs, not workers

MASON CITY (KWWL) -- A north Iowa hospital says it is cutting jobs, but hope to keep all the workers.

Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City says it will eliminate 59 jobs as it restructures its home health care service and hospice program. It also is closing a clinic in Rockwell.

The majority of the jobs to be eliminated are in hospice and home care.

Mercy spokesman Doug Morse says it's not a layoff, and employees in good standing will be offered new positions.

Officials cite several factors, including unfavorable investment returns, rising costs of uncompensated care due to increased numbers of unemployed and uninsured patients and expected decreases in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.
