Proposal asks lawmakers to require alternative fuel

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- A proposal before state lawmakers would make all regular diesel illegal in the state of Iowa after July 1.

In a report by the Des Moines Register, the new bill would have farmers, over-the-road truckers, school districts with diesel buses and owners of any personal vehicle with a diesel engine required to use biodiesel, an alternative fuel, which is largely soybean-based.

Biodiesel fuel is about two and a half cents per gallon more than regular diesel.

Minnesota has a similar mandate for biodiesel.
