Gunman kills 11 at German high school

WINNENDEN, Germany (AP) -- Police say a teenager who graduated from a high school near Stuttgart, Germany, last year returned there Wednesday with a gun and started shooting.

At least 11 people have been killed, most of them students.

The shooter, who was dressed in black, escaped. Police say he's 17. Helicopters searching for him crisscrossed the area, and police warned area residents not to pick anyone up in their cars.

Witnesses said students jumped from the windows of the school building after the gunman opened fire. Parents quickly swarmed around the school, which was evacuated.

The young man entered the school in the morning and fired at random, according to witnesses.

About 1,000 students attend the school in Winnenden, a Stuttgart suburb of 28,000.
