National Petland Protest Day

IOWA CITY (KWWL) As part of National Petland Protest Day, people plan to protest in Iowa City. It's organized by the Humane Society of the United States.

The peaceful protest is planned for Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the Petland on Lower Muscatine Road in Iowa City.

Organizers say Petland puppies come from puppy mills. The goals of the protest are to encourage Petland to stop this practice, to educate the public and to encourage people to adopt from animal shelters.

But a manager with Petland says the stores use licensed, USDA approved breeders and personally inspect kennels before agreeing to take on new breeders.

The Iowa City Petland manager says staff are very concerned with where pets come from and how they are taken care of in the store and after.

Petland's website says the store's mission is to match the right pet with the right person. People are also encouraged to adopt from shelters first.
