Authorities: Sex offender planned to kill witnesses, sheriff

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) -- Western Iowa authorities say they have foiled a scheme by a convicted sex offender to hire someone to kill a woman, her three children and a sheriff's investigator.

Terry Leggio has been charged in Pottawattamie County with five counts of attempted murder, five counts of conspiracy to commit murder and five counts of solicitation to commit murder. He is being held at the Harrison County Jail in Logan.

A Pottawattamie County jury found Leggio guilty in January on five counts of sexual abuse and one count of indecent contact with a child.

Court records show the Pottawattmie County sheriff's office received information from an informant last month that Leggio tried to hire him to kill the two child victims involved in sexual abuse case, a sibling and their mother, and the investigator in the case.

The affidavit says that the informant reported the Leggio felt he was wrongly accused and believed that if he was granted a new trial, and if the victims, their mother and the investigator were dead, he couldn't be convicted.
