Dunkerton schools to repay unauthorized tax money

DES MOINES (AP) -- A state audit has found that the Dunkerton school district in northeast Iowa collected more than $181,000 in an unauthorized tax to pay off a general obligation bond that didn't exist to build a new gymnasium.

A report released Monday by the state auditor's office shows the district collected the tax from July 1, 2005, to Dec. 31, 2008. The tax was included in property taxes paid by residents.

The report says the levy should not have been collected because it was not authorized. Auditor David Vaudt told the district to pay back the amount collected.

Dunkerton Superintendent Jim Stanton says it's unclear how the mistake was made and that the district will use unspent funds from last year to refund taxpayers.
