Flood concerns, more rain on the way - KWWL - Eastern Iowa Breaking News, Weather, Closings

Flood concerns, more rain on the way

WATERLOO (KWWL) - Rising rivers are causing flood worries to rise in eastern Iowa. And more rain is on the way.

Flood waters have closed several roadways.

In Black Hawk County, North Butler road is closed between Beaver Valley Road and Westbrook Road. Watters Road is closed between the Hudson city limits and Hollis Road.   And Hoff Road is closed south of Shaulis Road.

In Cedar Rapids, J Street SW between 50th and Hawkeye Downs Road is closed until further notice.

In Wapello, water is pouring through a levee break on the Iowa River east of town, covering a county road and threatening thousands of acres of land along the river.

Louisa County Sheriff Curt Braby says the levee broke during last summer's record flooding and was never repaired.

The flooding from a weekend of heavy rain isn't threatening Wapello because the city sits on high ground, but Braby says nerves are getting frayed.

The sheriff says a temporary sand levee protecting Oakville is holding, but residents are wary. The community was nearly wiped out by the Iowa River last summer when the permanent levee broke.

The steady weekend rain has prompted flood warnings in eastern and central Iowa including the Mississippi, Wapsipinicon Cedar, Des Moines, English and Skunk rivers.
