ACS Daffodil Bears replaced after tornado

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) Nothing. That's what was left of Brenda Terpstra's house after the Parkersburg tornado. Terpstra was in Ames at the time of the storm, but came home after getting a phone call.

"It was awful. It was all gone. Like everybody says, it was all gone," said Terpstra.

In the devastation, Terpstra lost some bears very close to her heart. She got the bears by purchasing daffodils through the American Cancer Society.

Terpstra is a cancer survivor and began volunteering for the American Cancer Society in 2004, the year after her husband died from cancer.

Recently, ACS staff surprised her with replacement Daffodil Bears.

"I was flabbergasted, thankful. It's awesome. I love them," said Terpstra.

With her connection to cancer, Terpstra encourages people to think about purchasing daffodils through the ACS, especially a "Gift of Hope."

The "Gift of Hope" is a bouquet of daffodils given anonymously to patients at local hospitals or treatment centers. The ACS says Gift of Hope sales are down significantly this year.

Terpstra knows first hand what it means to get the daffodils hand delievered.

"It's hope for a new day, a new cure, and someday a world without cancer," she said.

Terpstra lives in Cedar Falls now, but is re-building her house in Parkersburg, but at a different location. She hopes it will be done in a couple months.

One of the first things she plans to do is find a spot for her Daffodil Bears.

"They'res so soft. I just love them!" said Brenda Terpstra.

To purchase a "Gift of Hope" daffodil bouquet through the American Cancer Society, call your local ACS office or 1-800-ACS-2345.
