YGC: New Hartford toy drive honors Brady Dove

NEW HARTFORD (KWWL) Several years ago, five-year-old Brady Dove of New Hartford died after battling cancer for more than two years.

"When I was in fourth grade my brother was diagnosed with neuro blastoma. It's a childhood cancer," said 17-year-old Matt Dove.

To honor Brady's giving spirit, family and friends organize a toy drive each year in his memory. Notes get sent home, and children at Dike-New Hartford Elementary bring in toys.

"With my brother dying it affected a lot of people, and I think everybody wants to help out," said 16-year-old Ashtyn Dove.

This year, students brought in about 100 toys. All will be delivered to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital in Iowa City, where Brady spent a lot of time.

"It means a lot to my parents because Brady was a really big part of our lives, and he meant a lot to us," said Matt Dove.

Two years ago, Ashtyn Dove took the toys to the children's hospital.

"You could tell they were happy someone took time to do that for them," she said.

Family and friends said they want to do something each year to celebrate Brady's life and help others. They said this toy drive is what Brady would have wanted.

"He was never worried about himself. He was always worried about other kids. He'd be happy," said Ashtyn Dove.
