Warmer weather exposes potential safety hazards

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Local power companies want to remind customers of potential safety concerns with electrical and gas equipment that may have been damaged over the course of the winter. The heavy snowfall this winter has hidden possible damage to electrical or gas distribution equipment and with the warmer weather we may receive calls to report visible damage.

Alliant Energy customers should call 1-800-Alliant (255-4268) in Iowa and Minnesota to report any visual damage to equipment. Damage to equipment can come in many forms and the damage can be extensive. Snowmobile operators can inadvertently run over transformers without their knowledge and compromise the protective panels. Snowplow drivers can also unknowingly hit transformers or other equipment mounted on pads and damage or push them off of their base. Meters can be damaged when snow or ice fall from the roofs and hit the meter on the way down.

"Our employees are continually inspecting and looking for damaged equipment, but with thousands of pieces of equipment and miles of lines, we occasionally receive calls from our customer's identifying damaged equipment," said Vern Gebhart, Vice President - Energy Delivery Operations West "We take very seriously the safety of our employees and customers, this is why it's critical we are aware of safety hazards."
