Iowa Senate approves $30 million spending cut

DES MOINES (AP) -- The Iowa Senate has sent Gov. Chet Culver a package that slashes spending by more than $30 million in this year's budget.

The Senate approved the measure on a 32-14.

One of the effects of the cuts has already been made clear, with the closing of the state's court system for eight days over the next four months.

The possibility of further cuts still exists.

A panel of state budget experts will meet later this month to issue new projections on state tax collections. A sharp reduction isn't expected but the recession has worsened since the panel met in December.

Once this year's budget is settled, lawmakers will focus on next year's budget where the shortfall is projected to be about $700 million.
