Iowa panel backs increased hunting fee

DES MOINES (KWWL) - A legislative committee approved plans to charge out-of-state visitors more to hunt and fish in Iowa.

Some outdoor groups had signaled a willingness to see fees increased if the money would help habitat or pay for trails. But lawmakers have focused on out-of-state visitors because Governor Chet Culver opposed raising fees for Iowa residents.

Among the changes would be raising the license fee for out-of-state deer hunters from $150 to $300.

The Senate Natural Resources Committee approved the fee increase Thursday. The higher fees would raise up to $2 million annually.
