CR schools collecting band and orchestra instruments for students

CEDAR RAPIDS (NEWS RELEASE) -- Fifth grade students in the Cedar Rapids Community School District will soon have an opportunity to enroll in band and orchestra. For many young musicians, the inability to afford the cost of an instrument creates a challenge. To better ensure that all interested students have an opportunity to participate in instrumental music, the District is collecting donations of used instruments.

"Active music making is linked to better language and math ability, improved school grades, higher test scores, and better-adjusted social behavior," explained Earle Dickinson, music facilitator. "It is a positive activity that helps to build confidence and teaches lessons about diligence, creativity, and teamwork. Unfortunately, instruments are costly and some students in our schools can't afford to play their desired choice in school band or orchestra."

The District is asking for community help in providing instruments for students in need.

"As part of our observance of ‘Music in Our Schools' Month, we are asking for donations of used musical instruments for use in our school instrumental programs," Dickinson continued. "This type of contribution gives students more than just an instrument to play. It offers them a chance to discover talents they never knew existed and to develop a life long skill that will help them succeed in the future."

Instrument donations may be dropped off at the ESC at Kingston complex, modular building 301 or to any secondary school instrumental teacher. Contributors will receive a receipt form for the tax-deductible donation.

Questions should be directed to Dickinson at 319-436-7738 or any District instrumental teacher.
