Flu numbers are down

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- State health officials say an improved vaccine and a mild winter have cut the number of flu cases in Iowa.

The Iowa Department of Dealth says there has been an 86 percent drop in the number of people hospitalized with the flu this season.

As of last Friday, 14 people were hospitalized for the flu since last October.

Last year, 106 people were hospitalized by this time.

The health department's Megan Harris says this season's vaccine is a good match and it's been a mild winter.

She says last year, the vaccine protected about 40 percent of those who received it, and it was a bad winter.
