Holcim cement plant closing in Mason City

MASON CITY (KWWL) -- Hard economic times is forcing one of north Iowa's oldest industries to close.

The Holcim cement plant in Mason City says it will close at the end of August.  165 people will lose their jobs.  The company's history in Mason City goes back almost 100 years.

A Holcim plant in Artesia, Miss., will also close.

The Mass.-based company blames market conditions and a forecasted reduction in demand for cement. Holcim says production will stop but it will keep its equipment and its permits current in hopes of reopening within two years.

The Mason City plant started as Northwestern States Portland Cement Co. in 1908. It was sold to the Swiss firm Holnam in 1990 and was renamed Holcim in 2001.
