University presidents speak out against budget cuts

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The presidents of Iowa's three public universities say budget cuts being considered by the legislature would continue a trend of increased costs and larger class sizes.

The presidents told a legislative panel Tuesday that they understand the state's situation, but they argued that the schools are "economic engines".  Dr. Sally Mason told the panel that every dollar the state spends on the university is matched by seven dollars the college generates from other sources.

The schools are absorbing an 3 percent cut this year, and Governer Chet Culver has proposed an additional 6.5 percent cut.
