Two defending champs make it to State; Cougars keep winning

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Two local defending state champions are headed back to the state tournament and Sumner-Fredericksburg rode the momentum of last Tuesday's 4th quarter comeback all the way to Des Moines.

At the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls, reigning 1A champs NU-High took out West Central Maynard 54-33.  After that it was the Cougars from Sumner-Fredricksburg 63-60 over Garner-Hayfield.

At the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, future Hawkeye Eric May and the Golden Eagles of Dubuque Wahlert have a chance to repeat as state champs after getting past Mount Vernon 70-66.  In the nightcap, Marion advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 1952 with an 86-78 win over Mount Pleasant.
