Women with low levels of vitamin B-12 at the time they conceive are at risk of having a child with a neural tube defect. Irish researchers found women with the largest B-12 deficiency were --five-- times more likely to have a child with a neural tube defect than those with the highest levels. Women who don't eat meat or animal products are the most likely to have low B-12 levels, so researchers strongly recommend these women take folic acid supplements.
