Battery Up: firefighters check homes for fire dangers

Posted:

Linn County (KWWL) - The Red Cross says smoke detectors that work properly reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by 50-percent.

A Battery Up program will offer in-home fire prevention to elderly, disabled and low-income residents.

Firefighters and Red Cross volunteers will visit homes in Cedar Rapids, Delhi, and Hiawatha to change smoke detector batteries and identify fire safety hazards.

Fire experts recommend that residents test smoke detectors regularly and change the batteries twice a year.

Cedar Rapids Battery Up: March 6, 1-5 p.m. and March 7, 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Those wishing to participate must contact Grant Wood Area Chapter at (319) 393-3500 before March 1.

Hiawatha Battery Up: March 13 and 14, 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. Those wishing to participate may contact the Grant Wood Area Chapter at (319) 393-3500.
