New mural for Independence Public Library

INDEPENDENCE (KWWL)-- Last year, residents of Independence celebrated the opening of a new public library.  Saturday, it was more than just books that drew a crowd.

A new mural in the library's entrance is now on display.  It's by Independence native John Paul Schafer.

The project started two years ago when local painter Schafer approached the library board about donating a painting.

However, as library board members examined available space in the new facility, plans changed into a $35,000 project that was partly funded by two grants from the Iowa Art Council.

"I had a very specific vision for what I wanted to bring to this project, but I wanted to leave it open to the library administration and the board and generally any member of the community so that it would also reflect their voice," said artist John Paul Schafer.

Schafer's mural contains a hidden message.  If you look closely you can see the hidden letters of the word READ.  To see it yourself, watch the video tagged to this story.
