Iowa will close courts for 7 days due to budget

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The Iowa Supreme Court is ordering all court offices closed for seven days because of expected budget cuts.

The court issued the order Friday due to an expected $3.8 million reduction in its current budget.

The order means about 1,600 people must take unpaid leave on specified days, with the first set for March 20. Each day Iowa's court system closes will save about $335,000.

The closures are an addition to an earlier shutdown Feb. 16.

The court can't order judges and magistrates to take unpaid leave because the Legislature sets their salaries. When the system is closed, judges will work in their chambers.

Lawmakers are cutting budgets due to an estimated $500 million shortfall in the budget year beginning July 1.
