A governor-appointed task force is to begin examining state laws and regulations on the care and employment of mentally disabled adults.
Gov. Chet Culver established the task force earlier this month. It's meeting this week in Des Moines.
The group was created after the state fire marshal closed down an old house in Atalissa where 21 mentally disabled men from Texas were housed by a Texas-based company so they could work at a meatpacking plant in West Liberty. Allegations of mistreatment have surfaced.
Culver wants the task force to recommend how state law can be tightened to prevent similar events. The group is to submit its first report by April 1.
