Petition against Iowa evolution bill

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A group made up mostly of professors has organized a petition against a state bill that supports alternative teaching of evolution.

The legislation, known as the Evolution Academic Freedom Act, which was introduced this session by State Rep. Rod Roberts, R-Carroll.

The bill asserts that teaching religious theories of evolution falls under academic freedom.

It would let teachers at all education levels teach religious theories as science and forbid them from discounting non-science based answers from students.

More than 220 people, including 56 professors from the University of Iowa, signed the petition.

John Logsdon, an associate professor of evolutionary molecular genetics, says the premise of the petition is that the bill is "ridiculous."
