Commission hosts human rights luncheon

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The number of hate crimes in Waterloo has steadily increased since the summer floods and the economic downturn -- that's according to David Meeks with the Human Rights Commission.

"I think it has a lot to do with frustrations people have when you are at the point of leaving yor home or you've been displaced from your home," said Meeks.  "To have your race, characteristics, gender, ablility, another motivational fact is a burdensome thing."

To help raise money for the collaborated efforts of the Waterloo Commission on Human Rights, the group held its 11th annual Human Rights award luncheon Thursday.

5 awards were given out to community members of Waterloo and surrounding areas.  The awards were given to volunteers who helped increase the quality of life in their community.
