Gathering gowns for a good cause

CEDAR RAPIDS & CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Spring is headed our way, and that means prom season.  But, in these tough times, many young women can't afford an extravagant dress for such a formal occasion.

In many cases, a prom dress is worn just once and then sits for years in the closet.  But some Eastern Iowa organizations are trying to put last year's dresses to good use.

Z 102.9 is sponsoring Gown Town at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids.  They're providing prom dresses and accessories to high school girls who may not otherwise be able to attend prom.

It's free.  Each girl can receive one dress -- no questions asked.

Organizers say there's more of a need for dresses than ever before.

"I think it really is going to make an impact," said organizer Lisa Rowe.  "With the flood and the economy there's going to be more girls in need and i think the people that have the dresses are more willing to donate them because they do know there's a bigger need this year."

Heartland Vineyard church in Cedar Falls is also collecting gowns for area high schoolers.
The Cedar Valley has also seen it's fair share of natural disasters and this is their way to help those who have been through so much.

"With the economic times and also the flooding and the tornadoes we figured that prom was probably the last thing on a lot of people's minds," said Amanda Roth event coordinator.  "Going out and buying that really nice dress that every girl dreams about."

Gown Town will be giving out their dresses this Saturday at Lindale Mall.  So if you'd still like to donate, you need to get them to the mall by tomorrow.

The Heartland Vineyard church is having their sale on April 4th.  They're taking donations at their church on Greenhill Road, Wesley Foundation at UNI, and Milroy's Tuxedo's at Crossroads Mall.
