Lightning blamed for Iowa vehicle crash

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Authorities say a lightning strike likely caused a chunk of concrete to crash through a van's windshield on Interstate 80 in West Des Moines, injuring the driver.

Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Fulk says the woman was driving in a thunderstorm Thursday afternoon when she heard a boom and saw a bright flash.

Fulk says two pieces of concrete -- one about 5-inches in diameter and another about 6-inches in diameter -- were found inside the van. He says it's possible that one piece hit the van and split apart upon impact.

The woman was struck in the shoulder. She was being treated for minor injuries at a Des Moines hospital.

Fulk says the woman pulled off the road without causing an accident. Her name hasn't been released.
