Iowa education officials nix 4-day school week

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Education has turned down its first official request for a four-day school week.

Bondurant-Farrar, in central Iowa, is the first district in the state to formally request an exemption from the five-day school week.

The four-day plan was supposed to help cover a $1.3 million budget deficit and provide more time for teacher training.

The district requested a waiver in January for the 2010-2001 school year. It wanted to take Mondays off and tack on a little more than an hour to the other days of the week.

District superintendent Peggy Vint says district officials had already decided to abandon the four-day week proposal. That's because of parental concerns and the results of a survey.
