Univ. of Iowa dean says furloughs seem likely

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Unpaid furloughs could be looming for employees at the University of Iowa.

A University of Iowa dean says the school is considering furloughs to deal with state budget cuts.

College of Liberal Arts Dean Linda Maxson told a faculty group Wednesday they are expecting furloughs "for a day or two or three" for faculty and staff.  However, she said nothing is officially decided.

The school will have to wait to make specific plans until the Legislature approves a higher education budget in late April. University officials then will have about two weeks to submit a budget to the Board of Regents.

Gov. Chet Culver has proposed a 6.5% across-the-board cut in state programs for next fiscal year. Iowa is bracing for up to a $26 million cut.
