Second Loras mock trial team qualifies for nationals

DUBUQUE (News Release)-- Loras College has qualified a second mock trial team to the opening round of national competition. The team's sixth place finish this past weekend at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet, Ill., secured their bid.

Senior Jamison Kuhle of Dubuque was awarded Top Regional Attorney Honors and first year student Leah Hocking of Brentwood, Calif., won an Outstanding Witness Award for her portrayal of a gubernatorial candidate defamed by a media outlet. Sophomore Kelly Dolphin of Lauderdale, Minn.; first year students Fergus Chau of Kowloon, Hong Kong, and Keith Flinn of Westport, Conn.; and seniors Matthew Woller of Kewanee, Ill., and Chris Migely of Winnetka, Ill., completed the team.

The team will advance to the Chicago opening round of nationals March 13-15 at the Lake County Courthouse in Waukegan, Ill., while the Loras team who won the Midwest Regional competition on Feb. 14 will compete in the Kansas City Opening Round of Nationals.

"This is mock trial's ‘March Madness,'" said Mary Lynn Neuhaus, J.D., director of the mock trial program. "More than 500 teams began the elimination process this month. The 150 teams left standing in March will be whittled to the top 48 who compete for the National Championships in mid-April in Des Moines."
